Tirana, October 3 – The Association "Women, Security, Peace" AWSP, welcomed the new European Parliament resolution "On the importance of a common European memory for the future of Europe" which was voted on September 19, 2019. On the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II, which led to unimaginable levels of human suffering and the occupation of European countries for many decades, the European Parliament has adopted a 22-point resolution.
This resolution was drafted in line with the universal principles of human rights and the fundamental principles of the European Unionas a community based on shared values and resolutions adopted over the years on the need for international condemnation of the crimes of totalitarian communist regimes, remembrance of crimes committed by totalitarian regimes in Europe, combating certain forms and expression of racism and xenophobia through criminal low as well as europian awareness of totaltarianism.
The Association "Woman, Security, Peace", which is very attentive to these issues by making constant efforts to guarantee the safety and peace of women, welcomes this very important resolution that promotes human rights and condemns all forms of totalitarianism.
There can be no peace without historical memory, says the European Parliament, which suggests deepening work in the field of education and awareness of the younger generation and in revising school curricula through an analysis of the causes.
The impunity of the crimes of the Communist regime continues to be a serious wound for the Albanian society even 27 years after the fall of the regime, while not dignifying the victims. There are 9778 women persecuted during the communist regime, of which 90 women are executed and six dead in prison. Despite official stigmatization, the torture of these persecuted women still continues while their persecutors have not yet been brought to justice. Debates over the rape of women in dictatorship seem to camouflage history, and add to the difficulty of denouncing it, meanwhile prison women have been waiting for nearly three decades to rehabilitate.
Raising awareness of the common European legacy of crimes perpetrated by nazi-communist dictatorships is vital to the European Union and its people and to building European resistance to modern external threats, such as the case of radical political parties and groups. , racist and xenophobic that incite hatred and violence in society, such as through online dissemination of hate speech, which often leads to an increase in violence, xenophobia and intolerance.
This resolution emphasizes European integration as a model of peace and reconciliation to commit to a common future. Europe's tragic past must continue to serve as a moral and political inspiration to meet the challenges of today's world, including the struggle for a fairer world. To this end, the Association "Woman, Security, Peace" urges the Albanian Government to welcome and adopt this Resolution and, together with all stakeholders, politicans, associations of the former persecuted people, civil society, public and international institutions to look at effective ways and means to implement it so that Albanian society can create a society of open and tolerant communities that embrace ethnic, religious and sexual minorities while making European values work equally for everyone.
